The Spirit's Thirst

John 4:14"….whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." 15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst…."

Our inner being, our spirit thirsts just as our physical body thirsts. We pursue possessions, influence, esteem, pleasures and all kinds of other earthly things in an attempt to satisfy this longing-but it remains. The experience is something like a man lost and drifting on the ocean with no water. He can drink as much ocean water as his stomach will hold, but it only makes his thirst more severe. Such are worldly things--when acquired they leave our inner being only emptier and more lost.

Jesus offers us that which will satisfy the spirit forever. It is God's salvation and all that comes with it-a never- failing spring of water within us by which we never need to thirst spiritually again, in this life or the next. As one writer put it, "Put (the Christian) in a dungeon and he will find good company; place him in a barren wilderness, he will eat the bread of heaven; drive him away from friendship, he will meet the One who sticks closer than a brother." Christian, are you experiencing the fullness of Christ and His salvation so that your spirit is satisfied? If no_ Christ would say, "Turn your focus from earthly things to Me and spiritual things, and I will quench your real thirst." Let's do that today as we worship God and enjoy Christian fellowship together.

If you are not a Christian and you have felt this thirst for something that would quench your spirit's emptiness and longing, then you may say to Him as did the woman with

Jesus at the well, "Lord Jesus, give me this water, that I may not thirst…." Friend, today

is the day of salvation. Do not let it pass without drinking the water of everlasting life.
